Assignment 8

Assigned: 29 November 2011
Due: 1 December 2011
Points:  20 points = 10 points for the post, 10 points for citing all images and information correctly

Chao Cac Ban!

I hate to say it, but I am very disappointed in how most of the class is not taking ICT class seriously. Here is a summary of the class grades to date:

A - 2
B - 1
D - 1
F - 13

That is miserable. I have emailed each of you your grade report as of today in ICT class. You need to get your act together and finish up the posts you are missing or complete the ones you never finished. All late work must be emailed to me by the end of the day Friday. After that I will not accept any late work. If you have questions, see me after class or at lunch. You can also email me if you have questions or something to say about your grades.

Today we will be focusing on citing information that we "borrow" from other websites properly. This is important because if you just take it and don't say where it came from it is STEALING! When you steal someone's work - whether it is an image, an entire paper, a paragraph, or even a phrase - it is called plagiarism. It will not be tolerated. If you are caught plagiarizing work at the university level they kick you out of the university. It is a very serious matter. For the next few weeks we will be learning how to cite the original source of many different materials, which means to give credit to the author or company that you got the material from.

As always, if you do not finish during ICT time you need to find time at home or during breaks at school to complete the assignment.

Citing another website

When you copy and paste information into your blog, it is very important to give credit to the person who wrote the information. Even if you are not copying and pasting, if you are writing most of the same ideas you need to give them credit. There is a very specific way that we do this. Please follow these directions carefully.
  • Be sure you use the URL of the original page of the information.
  • Be sure you get the information from a reliable source.
  • After you have inserted the information or ideas in your blog, you should cite the source. This is how you cite a website:
    • Author's Surname, First name or INITIALS., Year. Title of website (use italics). Type of media. Place of publication (if given), Publisher (if ascertainable). Available from: URL [Accessed Date].
    • If there is no title of the image or video, briefly describe the image or video and place quotation marks around the title so we know you are just guessing at the title.
    • For example:
      • Suzuki, Lea. 2005. Election Results are in. Website. San Francisco, SFGate. Available from: http://www.sfgate.com [Accessed 14 Nov. 2009].
      • Atkinson, T., 2002. Social Europe and social science. Website. Swindon, Economic & Social Research Council. Available from: http://www.esrc.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/Images/2002AnnualLecture_tcm6-5500.pdf [Accessed 15 August 2011].

The goals of your blog post are the same as they have been plus one new one:
  • Writing 200+ words
  • Inserting images into posts -At least 1 image
  • Cite the source of the image properly
  • Formatting font appearance
  • Formatting image appearance
  • Be sure to properly cite any website that you took information from
Remember to cite all the images and websites you borrow information from in your post, then email me the link to your latest blog post before the end of the day 1 December 2011. Again, my email address is kristin.romberg@saigonsouth.sis.edu.vn but I should be in your address book by now.

All late work must be in by the end of the day Friday, 2 December 2011. No excuses for late or incomplete work!

Good luck!

Assignment 7

Assigned: 22 Nov. 2011
Due: 23 Nov. 2011
Points:  20 points = 10 points for the post, 10 points for citing all images correctly

Chao Cac Ban!

The blogs are coming along quite nicely (for most of you). Today we will be focusing on citing images we "borrow" from other websites properly.

Citing an Online Image or Video File

When you copy and paste an image or file into your blog, it is very important to give credit to the person who took the picture, made the image or video. There is a very specific way that we do this. Please follow these directions carefully.

  • Be sure you use the URL of the original page of the image. Do not use the URL of the enlarged image by itself. You need to show where it came from.
  • Be sure you get the image or video from a reliable source. If it is from a blog be sure the author of the blog didn't steal the image from someone else. Do a quick google image search to see if the same image comes up in more than one place then choose the site that includes the creator's name along with the image. If none of the sites list the creator or use the copyright symbol the site that is most well known.
  • After you have inserted the image in your blog, you should cite the source. This is how you cite an image or video found online:
    • Author's /Editor's Surname, First name or INITIALS., Year. Title (use italics).
2005. "Mick Jaggar." Photo. San Francisco, SFGate. Available from: http://www.sfgate.com [14 Nov. 2005].
      • Atkinson, T., 2002. Social Europe and social science. Book Cover.

  • Inserting images into posts - today I want at least 3 images so you can practice citing them
  • Formatting font appearance
  • Formatting image appearance
  • Be sure to properly cite all of the images/videos in your blog post
You should remember how to do a blog post without me writing directions here. If you need the directions look at an earlier post to find them.

Remember to cite all the images in your post (and you must have at least three images) and email me the link to your latest blog post before the end of the day 23 Nov. 2011. Assignment 6

Post #4 and Backing Up Our Blog

Assigned: Nov. 15, 2011
Due: Nov. 16, 2011
Points:  20 points = 10 points for the post, 10 points for backing up your blog data

Chao Cac Ban!

The blogs are looking pretty good. At this point you should have at least three posts (2 assigned by Ms. Greta was and one assigned by me). Today we will be adding one more post AND backing up our blog. Be sure to give yourself time to do both. If you do not finish during ICT time you need to find time at home or during breaks at school to complete the assignment.

Another Post

The goals of your blog post are the same as they have been:
  • Writing 200+ words
  • Inserting images into posts
  • Formatting font appearance
  • Formatting image appearance
You should remember how to do a blog post without me writing directions here. If you need the directions look at an earlier post to find them.

Backing Up Your Blog

If you delete your blog, all of your data will be lost. There are a few ways to back up your blog data.
We will go over three ways today in class.

1) Printing from a browser. This is the easiest way to back up your data. From whatever browser you are using (Internet Explorer, Moxilla Firefox, GoogleChrome, etc.) you go to File and select Print. If you do this from the main page in your blog it should include all the posts that fit on the screen. If your main page takes more than one page (check out one of my blogs at http://tribeirut.blogspot.com/ as an example)than you must print again when you move to the "older posts" page. You print each post separately if you would like. Either way, be sure you have each page printed and store them someplace safe.

2) Saving as a screen shot. This is an easy way to save a small amount of data. On my blog it would take a very long time to take screen shots of the whole blog. To take a screen shot (or picture) of the entire screen you press the Print Screen Key, which is usually labeled PrtScn. Next open the application where you want to paste the image (I suggest using Microsoft Office). Paste the screen shot by pressing the Control Key and the V key at the same time. Or you can paste it by going to File and selecting Paste.

3) Saving as an HTML file. This is the best way to save your data. You go to File and select Save Page As. Next you select where you would like to save the file and what you would like to call it. Be sure the type of file is Webpage, complete. The file should now open using any browser.

Remember to email me three things: 1) the link to your latest blog post 2) the screen shots of your blog and 3) the saved HTML file of your blog. I do not need you to print out a paper copy of your blog, although you can if you want to (on your own paper at home).

Good luck!

Assignment 5: Another Post

Google Blogger 3

Assigned: Nov. 8, 2011
Due: Nov. 10, 2011
Points:  10 points

Chao Cac Ban!

We are continuing along with our blogs and practicing the skills learnt last term. Let's get serious with our blogs now that you had your practice last week with your blogs.

This week's goals are the same as last assignment:

  • Writing 200+ words
  • Inserting images into posts
  • Formatting font appearance
  • Formatting image appearance
Here are the steps for today's assignment:
  1. Go to blogger.com
  2. Create a new post
  3. Name the title of your post something related to your topic (e.g. if your blog is about video games, you could write "Final Fantasy 9 Review")
  4. Go to images.google.com and find a picture related to your post's topic
  5. Insert the picture, but be sure to click "View Full Size Image".
  6. Copy that image's URL (address)
  7. In your Post Editor, click the insert image icon and choose the option "From a URL"; now paste the image's URL from the website.  If you do this, your image will upload very quickly to your blog.
  8. Now click "Add Selected"
  9. Once your image is in your blog, click the image and choose the hyperlink "Large" and "Center".
  10. Now write a text caption underneath the photo and use bold and italic font.  Make the text another color that is easy to read with your blog's theme.
  11. You must write 200+ words in your post about your theme.
  12. When you are done, email me your post's URL by clicking the post's title. My email is kristin.romberg@saigonsouth.sis.edu.vn
  13. In your email, write a professional email that says a greeting, your hyperlink, sincerely, your name, and "______________'s Assignment 5" as the subject.
Good luck!
